GP Motorcycle concepts

Project Overview

Redbull challenged me and 12 others to design and build 2 full-size GP motorcycles in 10 weeks that would portray the future of Grand Prix racing 25 years into the future. The motorcycles had to be fully functional aside from the motor.

    • Define project criteria
    • Research current Grand Prix motorcycle industry
    • Research track and aerodynamics
    • Research magnetic drive for hubless wheels
    • Research lightweight materials for chassis and fairings
    • Begin the design process with rapid sketches
    • Conduct team brainstorming session to refine criteria
    • Create refined concepts
    • Conduct team meeting to choose 2 designs
    • Create 1/4 scale models from high-density foam
    • Create full-scale models from high-density foam
    • Refine designs from human factor testing with Eric and Ben Bostrom, professional GP racers
    • Run designs through computer-simulated aerodynamic testing
    • Complete full-scale foam models of fairings
    • Fabricate chassis from aluminum
    • Fabricate fairings from plastics and fiberglass
    • Fit fairings to chassis for adjustments
    • Dismantle and prepare for paint
    • Assemble 2 fully functional rolling chassis
    • Package and ship to Grand Prix in Laguna Seca California
